Backlight aviation photography: the hardest light in plane photography!

Most plane spotters and aviation photographers spend their first few years chasing front-and-side light. It's the safe choice — even exposure, clean colors, no drama with the histogram. Then at some point, usually by accident, someone catches an approach with the sun low and behind the aircraft, and the picture that comes out of it looks nothing like the hundred "correct" shots sitting in their folder before it. A glowing rim around the fuselage, a silhouette with just enough detail to read the type, engine heat shimmer turned into something almost liquid. That's the moment backlight stops being a mistake to avoid and starts being a tool. This post is about how to use that tool on purpose instead of stumbling into it.

Shooting toward the light source flattens the usual "nice photo" logic on its head. Instead of even, descriptive light across the whole airframe, you get hard contrast, edge definition, and often a much stronger sense of motion and atmosphere. Contrails glow. Prop and rotor discs turn into rings of light. Heat haze coming off the engines becomes visible and adds a sense of power you don't get in flat light. Runways in early morning or late afternoon throw long shadows and low-angle haze that a front-lit shot simply doesn't have. It's also the light that reads as "cinematic" to most viewers, because it's the light cinematographers reach for on purpose. There's a reason so many aviation shots that actually stop people scrolling are backlit or near-backlit rather than textbook three-quarter front light. None of that comes free, though. Backlight photography punishes sloppy technique harder than any other lighting condition, which is exactly why so many photographers avoid it.


Problems and concerns


Point a camera at an aircraft with the sun somewhere behind or near it, and you're asking the sensor to hold detail in a bright sky and a dark airframe at the same time. Most sensors can't do both without help. Get the exposure wrong and you either blow the sky to featureless white or crush the aircraft to a black blob with no texture left to recover. Any bright light source near or in frame is going to bounce around inside your lens elements. You'll see it as washed-out contrast, colored polygon ghosts drifting across the frame, or a general veiling haze that kills contrast even when no obvious flare shape is visible. Cheaper lenses and older coatings suffer more; modern lenses with nano-coatings handle it better but nothing is immune. Contrast-detect and even a lot of phase-detect systems get confused by a strong light source near the subject. You'll get hunting, or the AF will lock onto the light instead of the aircraft, or it'll simply refuse to commit. This gets worse the longer your lens and the smaller your subject is in frame, which is exactly the situation most aviation photographers have. Backlight reveals atmospheric particulate — dust, moisture, pollution — that front light hides. Sometimes that's beautiful (it's part of why sunset shots glow). Sometimes it just looks like a milky, low-contrast mess, especially at midday with the sun higher and harsher.

Useful camera settings


Never track the sun directly through an optical viewfinder for an extended period. If you're working a full-backlight scene, use Live View / EVF framing to compose and only glance through an optical finder briefly, or better, time your compositions so the sun is occluded or just out of frame until the last moment. Matrix/evaluative metering will often see all that bright sky and underexpose your subject into a pure black shape with no recoverable detail, which is fine if that's the look you want but frustrating if it isn't. Spot metering on the aircraft itself, or switching to manual exposure entirely and setting it by eye/histogram, gives you far more control. LCDs and EVFs lie to you in bright backlit conditions — screen brightness and glare make everything look worse than it is. Trust the histogram. For a silhouette shot, you want the aircraft's tonal spike pushed toward black without clipping to pure zero (keep a sliver of shadow detail if you can, it gives you options later). For a shot where you want some airframe detail, expose to protect the sky highlights and plan to lift shadows in post — this only works cleanly if you're shooting RAW. Backlit scenes are exactly where JPEG's baked-in tone curve falls apart. RAW gives you the latitude to recover shadow detail and tame highlights that JPEG simply throws away.

For crisp silhouettes with strong sun-star rays, stopping down (f/8–f/20 depending on lens) turns the sun into a defined starburst, which a lot of photographers like for the dramatic effect. For motion blur on props and rotors in a nicely lit backlit scene, you're back to the usual panning shutter speeds (1/60–1/125 for props depending on RPM and focal length), just metered carefully. Wide open apertures in backlight tend to maximize flare and reduce contrast, so if flare is fighting you, stopping down two or three stops often helps as much as anything you do with a lens hood. Wide-area autofocus is far more likely to snag on the sun or on flare artifacts. A single point held tightly on the leading edge of the aircraft gives the AF system the best chance of tracking through the light. In tricky light where AF might hunt or momentarily lose the subject, decoupling focus from the shutter button lets you hold or re-acquire focus independently of firing frames, which matters a lot when a flare flash briefly confuses the system mid-pass. It won't stop flare from a light source actually inside the frame, but it cuts a surprising amount of stray light hitting the front element at an angle, which is where a lot of veiling haze comes from.


Timing is everything


As with so many other aspects of photography, timing is also very important when taking photos with backlight. Backlit conditions change fast — a thin cloud drifting across the sun, the aircraft's exact position relative to your lens axis shifting frame to frame — so the difference between a flare-wrecked frame and a clean one might be half a second of timing. Burst mode earns its keep in backlight more than almost any other condition. The time of day is also very important. In my experience, backlight photography in the morning or evening often results in the most beautiful photos. The light is softer then, and there’s more color in the sky. When you take backlit photos around noon, the light is particularly harsh. Don't be disappointed if there are a few light clouds in the sky. For example, cirrus clouds can act as a softening factor when backlit, making the harsh sunlight much softer.

Post-processing


Backlit RAW files usually look disappointing straight out of camera — flat, hazy, high in contrast. That's normal and expected; this is a lighting style that leans on post-processing more than most. Start with a black point and shadow adjustment before anything else.  Backlit files often have a grey, milky look from flare veiling. Pulling blacks down and adding a touch of contrast usually fixes more of this than any dehaze slider. Dehaze/clarity-style tools are genuinely useful here, but go easy. These tools work by adding local contrast, and backlit atmospheric haze is exactly the kind of thing they're built for. Overdo it, though, and you get an unnatural, crunchy sky with visible haloing around the aircraft — a dead giveaway of heavy-handed processing. Small, incremental moves, checking at 100% zoom around the edges of the airframe, will save you here. Watch for halos around the silhouette edge. Aggressive sharpening or clarity applied globally will produce a bright fringe right where the dark airframe meets the bright sky — the classic tell of an over-processed backlit shot. If you see it, back off sharpening locally around that edge or mask it out. Recover shadow detail selectively, not globally. If you exposed to protect the sky and want to bring some texture back into the fuselage of an aircraft, do it with a local adjustment (radial or brush mask) rather than a global shadow slider, which will also lift the sky and kill your contrast. Push it until you can just make out panel lines or engine detail, then stop — full recovery usually looks worse than a partial, moody result. Deal with sensor dust and dead pixels — they will show up. Even sensors that look clean in normal light reveal dust spots and hot pixels against a smooth bright sky. Always check at full zoom and spot-heal them; a bright, otherwise glowing sky with a visible dust speck is one of the fastest ways to undercut an otherwise strong image. Thanks to the latest versions of Adobe Lightroom, you can now also select the sky or the subject — in this case, an airplane — separately so that you can apply individual edits to them.

Research your location


If you're going to take photos of airplanes or helicopters abroad or at a place you've never been to before, it's always a good thing to find out where the sun will be. A very handy tool for this is SunCalc. Thanks to this website and smartphone app, you can look up your exact location for any given time to see where the sun, sunrise or sunset will be in the sky at that moment. This tool can be very useful when you want to take a very specific photo at a certain location.
